My research explores the information-sharing practices of artist-researchers. I’m interested in learning about how artist-researchers perceive and engage with research-creation—an approach that brings together creative and academic research practices–to conduct and share research.

As part of an interdisciplinary team including Lois Klassen (Research Ethics Board), Hillary Webb (librarian) I am conducting a literature regarding issues regarding ethics and creative research.

Research Assistant, University of University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C., Phone Me (October – December 2021)
Supported the development of onboarding material for a place-based poetry mobile application called PhoneMe (Principle Investigator Kedrick James, Amelia Cole and Andrea Hoff). Contributed by researching, designing, and presenting UX principles in a Digital Humanities context.

Research Associate, University of Washington, Seattle, WA. Virtual Online Community for Aging Life Experience (VOCALE)
(January 2020 – July 2021)
In collaboration with Dr. Annie Chen (University of Washington) and Dr. Heather O’Brien I developed and analyzed qualitative coding (using Nvivo) regarding the representation and lived experience through the data collected through the Virtual Online Communities for Aging Life Experience (VOCALE). Navigated data sharing agreements and ethics submissions, and engaged initerative process of establishing research topic and goals.

Conducted literature review of arts-based research in library and information studies. Analyzed and synthesized findings in the form of a forthcoming journal article with Heather De Forest.

As part of an interdisciplinary team of psychologists, designers and people with lived experience completed literature reviews that culminated in a published position paper to situate user engagement in the e/Health/m/Health discipline.

Research Associate, Queen’s University, Kingston, Ont. Monetary Appraisal of Born-Digital Records (September 2018 – present)
Developed questionnaires in Qualtrics which was distributed to archivists, conservators, and appraisers to determine possible models for assigning monetary value to digital records, and to develop criteria to evaluate digital records. Transcribed and analyzed interviews to establish themes. Completed literature review and environmental scan of institutional policies.

Research Associate, University of British Columbia Engagement Lab, Vancouver, B.C. Effects of Domain Knowledge Interest and Difficulty on Searching, Learning and Engaging with Digital Libraries
(November 2018 – May 2020)
Collected data through screen capture using Morae and Qualtrics to examine the relationship of users’ domain knowledge and perceptions of search difficulty while using a digital library. Plan and modify research techniques, procedures, tests, equipment and monitor software management following pilot testing. Schedule, organize, and report on status of research activities.

Research Assistant, Social Media Lab (SML), Toronto Metropolitan University, Toronto, Ont.
(November 2013 – May 2016)
Developed a tutorial and taught Netlytic (social media analysis tool) to researchers. Created original promotional video for Social Media Lab using Adobe Premier. Researched and presented findings on Instagram visualization tools to the SML team (Principle Investigator Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd). Edited submissions for Social Media and Society conference publication.

Research Assistant, Centre for Pediatric Pain research, Halifax, N.S. Evaluation of Social Media about Pediatric Pain (September 2015 – December 2016)
Collaboratively analyzed how pediatric pain is discussed on social media as part of a team of academics and health professionals (Dr. Michelle Tougas and Dr. Christine Chambers). Advised the research team in the use of Netlytic (social media analysis tool). Screened social media content and worked with team members to establish inclusion and exclusion criteria. Presented preliminary findings at Information without Borders conference.

Research Assistant, Dalhousie University, Halifax, N.S. Evaluation of Digital Scholarship in Social Sciences and Humanities (SSHRC) (February 2015 – June 2016)
Conducted literature review of digital pedagogy best practices for SSHRC. Analyzed the use of digital tools in Humanities and the Social Sciences. Synthesized data into a written report which was submitted to SSHRC.
